If there’s one thing I love to draw, it’s goofy noodly overly-detailed backgrounds. One thing I try to do quite a bit with Strangebeard (that I don’t do enough) is put cool stuff in the foreground to partially block the action. It’s one of my very favorite thing about my beloved Monkey Island games; Steve Purcell’s genius backgrounds which always include a foreground element to make the scene seemed lived-in and organic. If you don’t know Purcell, check out his pirate paintings on Google, his hilarious characters Sam & Max… or watch Brave, which he co-directed. I have a signed Purcell Tales of Monkey Island print hanging in our guest bedroom and it’s a real treasure of mine.
